Whether you are new to vaping or have been vaping for a while, it is clear that one of a few drawbacks of vaping is the cost of e-liquid. If you use a sub-ohm set up, you can easily vape through 15ml a day. These costs can soon add up, particularly if you have a penchant for premium e-liquids. Apart from the costs, choices are often limited and can leave you unsatisfied.

Thankfully, making your e-liquids is not too difficult and can be rewarding in many ways. DIY e-liquid is a fast-growing hobby and an obsession to many vapers.

With little guidance, you can make a bottle of e-liquid as good as any storebought product, with complete control over the taste, level of nicotine and
PG/VG ratio.

In the simplest term, making e-liquid involves mixing together four main ingredients, which are propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), nicotine and flavouring concentrate. You do not necessarily need all of these, for example if you are making a nicotine-free or want maximum VG e-liquid. Aside from the four main ingredients mentioned, there are other specialised additives that can be used to change the taste profile of e-liquids to suit your unique preference.

What do you need to get started?

1. PG – One of the two diluent for mixing, it is recommended to use US Pharmacopeia (USP) grade PG. If you are plus-ohm vaping you will definitely need a bottle of this.

2. VG – The other diluent for mixing, this will likely make up the bulk of your e-juice, particularly if you are sub-ohm vaping. As with PG, it is recommended to use US Pharmacopeia (USP) grade VG.

3. Nicotine – In the pursuit of obtaining the throat hit from vaping, you will need some nicotine in your e-liquid. It is important to note that nicotine has a flavour all its own, so your recipe may taste different at higher strengths of nicotine than lower. RAW nicotine is not only well tested and carefully handled, but we also take great care to make sure that our nicotine adds as little odour, taste, and colour possible. RAW nicotine is suspended in a USP PG solution, so be aware that this will affect the PG/VG ratio of your juice. Be very careful when handling and storing nicotine. Please make sure you are using all precautionary measures. Of course, if you prefer nicotine-free vape juice you can leave this out. Please keep your
nicotine out of children’s reach.

4. Flavouring Concentrate – These determine what your juice will ultimately taste like. There are thousands of individual flavours to choose from, which can be combined to make countless unique flavours. RAW Flavouring Concentrates offer a taste experience you will not find anywhere else because they have been specifically designed for inhalation rather than the food flavouring used throughout the industry. Generally the recommended dilution ratio is 10-15%, some less than that. Please refer to the flavour description for a specific dilution guideline. As mentioned before, these are the four main ingredients that are required. You will also need other equipments for the mixing process.

5. Syringes – A few 10ml syringes for PG and VG and plenty of 1ml syringes should suffice.

6. E-liquid bottles – You will need these to store your e-liquids.

How do I mix the ingredients to make an e-liquid?

Before we get started, it is very important to note down your recipes so that you will be able to reproduce it in the future. If you have made a mix that you love, you would certainly want to make sure that you can make it again! It is very unlikely that you will get it right on your first attempt, unless luck is on your side. It will take several variations to get it right.

As this guide is aimed primarily at beginners, we will start will a simple recipe.

1. First step is to determine the strength of nicotine. From this we can work out how much we need. If you do not want nicotine in you mix, you can
skip this step. To keep things simple, we will provide you with a basic table illustrating the common strength of nicotine in 50ml e-liquid and the respective volume needed. This table will cover the two types of nicotine we offer, RAW 48mg/ml and RAW 100mg/ml. If the example given is unsuitable for you, do not worry; there are many online e-liquid calculators that can calculate how much millimeter (ml) to include based on the criteria that is required. 2. For the purpose of this guide, we will use nicotine strength 6mg/ml as an example. Extract 3.0ml of RAW 100mg/ml and squirt it into 50ml eliquid
bottle. Please be reminded that nicotine is highly poisonous, it is wise to use safety gear such as gloves and goggles when handling it.

3. Now we need to add flavour. The recommended dilution for RAW flavouring concentrate is generally around 10-15%. For 50ml e-liquid, that equates to 5.0 – 7.5ml of flavouring concentrate. Again, keeping things simple, we choose RAW Blackcurrant as we find this flavour universally accepted in terms of taste and not too difficult to mix. Extract 5.0ml of RAW Blackcurrant and dispense it into the 50ml eliquid bottle.

4. Next come PG and VG. In order to determine how much ml to add, we must first decide what PG/VG ratio to use. 30/70 is suitable for sub-ohm vaping. If you want a version that works in a plus-ohm tank try a higher ratio of PG such as 50/50. If you change the PG/VG ratio you might need to adjust the amount of flavour added to get a similar taste. Using 50/50 ratio as an example, we need 17ml PG and 25ml VG. Bear in mind that nicotine and flavour is PG based, hence you will require less PG to make up the 50% ratio.

5. Now that we have all the ingredients in the 50ml e-liquid bottle, put the cap on and shake the bottle vigorously for several minutes to ensure that the nicotine and flavour are evenly dispersed and well mixed.

6. The next and final step is to steep the e-liquid. Steeping is the process over time where chemical reactions take place between the ingredients
and oxygen in the air. This lets the flavours blend together, and a little time may make a big difference depending on the flavours and flavour
combinations that you use. Many e-liquids will start to taste much better if they are allowed to steep for days or even weeks.

What about the additives? What are they for?

For those who are in search of perfection cannot deny the presence of a good additive in e-liquid, which makes all the difference. Whether to elevate the taste of certain aromas, round-up the final e-liquid, sweeten or give a sensation of freshness, the additives are essentially a form of personalisation that will provide a unique experience for the vaper. 1. Sucralose – The most popular form of sweetener for e-liquids. Sucralose has a neutral sweetness taste that will not alter other taste profiles of flavouring concentrates. Usage 2-3%

2. Stevia – is also a form of sweetener. Made from stevia plant extract, suitable for anyone who is looking for a natural sweetener. Stevia may
cause a tea-like aftertaste depending on the individual, not everyone will experience it. One obvious upside of using stevia is that it is less likely to gunk the coil as compared to sucralose. Usage 1-2%.

3. Ethyl Maltol – Main ingredient in cotton candy flavour. Can be used as sweetener or buffer to take off the sharpness of certain fruity flavours.
Used with creamy or tobacco flavour will provide ‘fullness’ to the flavour. Usage 1-5%

4. Citric Acid – Used as a tart or sour agent for an e-liquid. Works well with fruity flavours. Used moderately allows fruity flavours to pop out.
Used liberally will add sour taste to the e-liquid. Usage 1-3%.

5. Malic Acid – Similar to citric acid, malic acid allows fruity flavours to pop when used moderately. Used liberally will enhance ‘green apple’ sour tastes to the e-liquid. Usage 1-3%.

6. Clove – An excellent aroma for tobacco, gourmet or sweet recipes.

7. Cooling Agent – Can be used to add freshness and cooling sensation to the throat when inhaling, without any throat hit. It has neutral taste and
will not affect the original taste. A popular choice among vapers. Usage 1-2%.

8. Menthol Crystals – Similar to cooling agent, menthol crystals are used to enhance freshness and cooling sensation to the throat. Using menthol
will produce the throat hit effect similar to nicotine. Menthol will also produce a ‘menthol’ taste to the e-liquid. Usage 1 pinch every 30ml eliquid.
